Each year, on 21 February, South Africa joins the international community in observing International Mother Language Day, a day declared by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to promote linguistic diversity, multilingualism, and the protection and preservation of mother languages worldwide.

The National Library of South Africa (NLSA), in collaboration with the Northern Cape Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, commemorated International Mother Language Day on 24 February 2026, in Upington, Northern Cape.

The 2026 commemoration was held under the theme: “Celebrating Our Identity: Preserving Indigenous Languages for Future Generations”. The celebration aimed to highlight the importance of mother languages in strengthening educational outcomes, promoting social cohesion, and safeguarding South Africa’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.

Outlining the purpose of the day, Dr Ralph Links, CEO of the NLSA encouraged the youth to take pride in multilingual education, “To our young people present today: your multilingualism is not a weakness, it is your competitive advantage in a globalised world. You are not confined by speaking Nama, isiXhosa, Sesotho or Afrikaans alongside English. You are enriched by it. Your voice matters. Your language matters”.

The launch programme included a flag hosting ceremony at Paballelo High School, as well as book donation to S.C. Kearns High School and Cornelius Primary School. The NLSA continues to extend its reach and impact within communities, fostering a culture of reading and learning.
